Mm, I have a few hings I really enjoyed, even though it's not really mainstream.
Lovely Complex: Manga or Anime (I prefer the manga but I heard the anime was good too) -It's about a comedic duo. A girl named Risa is really tall, whereas a boy named Otani is pretty short for a boy. They fight and banter constantly, and the entire manga is really, really funny. Risa is a unique girl in the shojo universe. She's not pretty (well she is but Otani and most people, herself included, deny it), she's not very girly, and she's one of the funniest characters in there. Otani is a true cutie and I love him and his personality. Kinda like Edward from FMA. Awesomeness! I love it and highly recommend it.
Princess Tutu: Anime As the word Tutu suggests, this is an anime about ballet--however that is not the main theme. The main storyline is about a duck (Ahiru) who, by the deceased Author, gets turned into Princess Tutu, a princess who is in love with the prince but will disappear the moment she confesses her love. However, that's not all there is to the story. The story the author wrote was The Prince and the Raven, which was never completed since the author died. The Prince and the Raven were locked into an eternal fight, and so the Prince and the Raven jumped out of the story, and the Prince sealed the Raven by shattering his own heart.
This anime is, hands down, one of the most complex storylines I have seen thus far. The roles of the characters are constantly changing, and this story gave birth to (also according to Wikipedia) one of the most complex characters in terms of anime. Rue, the tragdic princess, the main antagonist, and the rival and friend to Princess Tutu. Kraehe is her counterpart, and she is the daughter of The Raven. I fell in love with Rue from the beggining, and with Fakir and Mytho (the Prince) even Ahiru/Tutu warmed my heart. This anime is both funny, sweet, yet bear in mind it is rather dark, especially for shojo standards.
Witch Hunter Robin: Anime This is one of the darker animes I've gotten into, and deals with Witchcraft and Occult. It has two heartthrob main characters. A 15 year old girl named Robin, who has come from Italy to join the STNJ-a Witch Hunters. She is the replacement for Amon's partner who had passed away, and is a special Craft User. Amon pretty much abandons her at the beginning, seeing her as a troublesome girl, but as the storyline gets more complicated and darker, they grow closer together, and it is implied that they have mutual romantic feelings. The storyline is pretty unique, not really shojo or shonen but simply occult. The characters are mysterious and likeable. The only little peeve I have is the animation. It is mostly excellent (especially opening and ending and the background sceneries) but sometimes you'll have their faces looking strange at one scene or another. Though it's insignificant compared to the story in general. I actually suggest watching the Dub (shock!) because I really prefer their voice actors, especially Amon's. For such a dark, cold character you need to be able to HEAR the varying degrees of emotion, and in the Japanese it just doesn't cut it. It also is one of the best Dubbing I've heard, so give it a shot.
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (Anime) This was the noted inspiration for MATRIX. A cyberhuman with a full prosthetic body who is one kick-ass female who works for Section 9. She works for a police subdivision, and one of their prime villians is a person/thing called The Laughing Man, who's logo is "I thought what I'd do was, I'd pretend I was one of those deaf-mutes". The Laughing Man is actually a Hacker, and is facsinated with the book Catcher in the Rye.
Motoko Kusunagi is one of the most popular anime characters ever to date, according to Wikipedia. I personally love her, so this makes me say yay. Even if you're not into sci-fi like cyberization, hackers and futuristic world, Ghost in the Shell is it's own kind of genre, and has made it's way into the hearts of anime and non-anime lovers alike. The openings and endings are spectacular, and even if you don't like the anime I'm sure you'll like them. I wish I could say more, but I myself have yet to finish the series. =P A definite recommendation for those who didn't watch it yet.

My contribution is Beck-Very good, if your into like rock and roll and such. Tsubasa Resovior Cronicles (Totaly misspelled)- Romance/adventure. I really like it so far. Disgeia- Based off of the game, so far so good. ROD(Read or Die, Read or Dream)- Very good anime and the manga is supposed to be ALOT better. Also manga wise I recomend MegaTokyo- American Made, but very good.

Here's yet another one many adventure/fantasy/sci-fi lovers would get a kick out of~
.Hack//Sign ~Anime~
Amidst a popular online role playing game in the near future, characters try to play out the goals they set for entertainment and passing of time. "The World" as the RPG is called is one with a setting of monsters, player characters and dungeons. Tsukasa is a detached and introverted wavemaster that has a number of mysteries about himself. Many weird happenings seem to surround Tsukasa and his involvement in a rare item called 'The Key Of The Twilight' sparks his meeting with different players and the befriending of their real life counterparts. All without ever meeting face to face in reality.
The odd thing about Tsukasa though, is that he can't seem to log out of The World. Subaru-hime of The Crimson Knights and the former leader Crim continue to look for proof of why Tsukasa can not log out, and the existance of The Key Of The Twilight.
Whilst Bear, Mimiru, and BT (Blademaster, Heavy Blade and fellow Wavemaster) as Tsukasa's friends try to help him understand who he really is and how he can return to the real world. Plus, the questions of whom "Aura" and "Morganna" are and what they have to do with "The World" begin to set conflicts upon Tsukasa's life... surprisingly though, even a question about Tsukasa's actual gender begins to unfold.

Phd. Manga. I think it's korean, but I'm not sure. It's very pervy, but also hilarious. Son-Hee Joon, the man who draws it, along with a few others, including Minkimomo, and other odd names...Which is what made me believe it's korean.
It's about a girl called Sang, a human, who tries to get into the demon school hades. It just so happens that humans and demon //Hate// each other, and constantly try to wipe each other out. The Madosa guild is the main attack against demons, an order of sorcerers.
And of course, it just so happens that to the Madosa guild, Sang is 'Lady Sang'. Extremely entertaining.
8/10. Deducted two points for killing off basically every character. xD

Hehe, I'm reading Tsubasa Reservoir (spelt correctly).
I'm in love, seriously. I mean, I was really disappointed about the Sakura and Syaoran relationship in CCS, so when I heard about this I was all 'YAY'.
I'm reading it at the mo, and the chapters are hella long.
Beauty Pop is also a nice shoujo manga, and I'm really happy because I have a list of stuff I have to read/watch after this.
It's extremely hard for me to watch anime (*cries*) so I'm sticking to reading what you've recommended.
