It was the day after her 'amazing' party.
It wasn't amazing. She just felt jealous of her childhood friend, and hated Asuma for...for being oblivious to how she felt.
She'd asked him in the party, if they should get together some time before school...to mark work. And that was all they were going to do, mark work. Because she'd never be anything more than friends with him.
Inside, she was telling herself that it was a mistake, a nightmare, and that any minute she'd wake up, and everything would be alright again. If only she could wake up faster...
All she had to do was wait, and pretend that Asuma and Shizune going on a date didn't affect her at all.
Kurenai did a quick make-up check in the mirror and tied her hair back into a loose ponytail.

Asuma sighed as he walked through the streets towards Kurenai's apartment. A cigarette was in his mouth of course as he was carrying some summer schoolwork which was to be marked. He still couldn't believe that she had asked him to do this. He thought she disliked him or something by most of her reactions at the party.
He still couldn't believe that he had asked Shizune out on a date. He wondered how it would go. Maybe the black haired woman would be able to make him forget about his love for Kurenai.
A frown came upon his face as he saw the door to her apartment. He just hoped that everything would go alright today. Sighing, he threw the cigarette on the ground and made it out, before softly knocking on the door.

She resisted the urge to fling the door open and knock him to the ground.
Calm and controlled, that was how she must appear.
He was simply coming round so they could mark work. Repeat, mark work. Nothing more, nothing less. And maybe a coffee or two, and a snack. Stop! You're getting ahead of yourself. Asuma is just marking work with you, and nothing else is going to happen. Its teacher-to-teacher...
She opened the door, and hoped that she wasn't blushing.

Asuma smiled as the red eyes woman opened the door. His first impression was that she looked very pretty. Her hair was in a loose ponytail and she was wearing some make-up as well. He couldn't help but see that her cheeks were a bit red as well. He wondered if she had a cold or something. But overall she looked very pretty.
He smiled gently as he scratched the back of his head. "Good to see you, Kurenai. How are you today?" He said as he looked the woman in those pretty red eyes.

"I'm...fine..."
She closed the door after he had come inside.
"Everything's in the lounge." Kurenai said, "And if you want anything, just ask..."
Her black hair hid her expression, and she was grateful for it. She felt so much...pain. Just seeing him, it was too much to bear. When she closed her eyes a picture of Shizune popped into her mind...it was best to keep them open.
She collasped heavily onto the couch and patted the seat next to her.

Asuma entered the room and followed Kurenai to the couch. He didn't know why...but something was wrong with the woman. It was as if she was trying to hide something from him or something.
He sat down next to her and accidentely brushed her arm with his. He blushed slightly. It was so faint that probably nobody was able to see it though. "Sorry about that, Kurenai." He said smiling nervously.
He then put the bag on the ground next to him, before letting out a big sigh. "So, how much do you've got left?"

"Oh, ages..." She groaned, and pointed theatrically to the stack of unmarked science tests. "Well, I kinda forgot that I had all of this and I sort of ignored it..."
Now was the era of the red biro!
Kurenai did some brief finger-warming excercises to get her ready for it.

Asuma couldn't help but smile as he saw Kurenai's 'excercises'
He grabbed the small stacks of math tests he had left and put it on the small table before him. "Well, I did a little bit a few days ago, so I don't have that much left anymore." He said, feeling a bit relieved that he didn't have as much as the woman next to him.
He then took the red marker out of his bag and sighed. "Well then, let's begin, shall we?"

"God..."
She scrawled a barely legible 'What kind of Science do you call this?' onto a paper. The person had just mistaken what 'gravity' was. She wanted to cry out in frustration. Ten-year-olds knew what gravity was!
"Listen to this; 'Air Resistance is a band that I like. They're cool'...it's depressing..."
How was she supposed to teach the kids Science if they didn't even know what the basics were?

Asuma smiled as he saw the faces that the woman next to him was making. Those poor kids didn't understand a thing about science and he knew that it could be hard, but what she just said was just terrible.
Looking over his own paper he sighed. "Jeez...some of the kids are just plain stupid....but just as my old man always used to tell me...we can't lose faith in them. They are the future." He shook his head as his red marker almost went through the paper.
He just didn't understand. How could these kids make mistakes like '2+2=5'? They were even allowed to use a calculator for crying out loud. Another sigh escaped his mouth as he had to use his red marker once again.

"The future is the Apocalypse." Kurenai said bleakly. "And I can see why."
She leant over and looked at Asuma's paper. "I can see that we're gonna have to make them learn."
After she scribbled 'See me' on another test and 'Go to Science Club' on at least five others, she left room for a sigh and a groan. And then she started once more.
Dumping the paper she was marking onto the table along with her pen, she gestured vaguely in the direction of the kitchen. "I'm getting a coffee. Want anything?"

Asuma sighed in defeat as nobody seemed to get any of the questions. This was getting rediculous. It seemed that he really needed to start a math club this year, or these kids were seriously going to fail math.
A small blush came upon his face when Kurenai leant over though. He didn't know exactly why, but her being so close made him feel hot.
As Kurenai asked him the question, he nodded with a gentle smile on his face. "Sure, if its not too much trouble." He then looked her in the eyes and couldn't help but smile. She was just so beautiful.
He quickly looked away from her and continued his work. He didn't want to be caught staring. At least he was almost done already.

"You sick?" She asked, and put her hand on Asuma's forehead. It was only slightly warm.
He seemed a little awkward. Maybe he was embarrassed because of his date with Shizune? Maybe he felt bad for her because his marking was nearly done and she had barely done a quarter of hers?
"I'll make us some coffee then..." She said, and moved away.
The kitchen comforted her with its familiarity and normalness, as she prepared two mugs and listened to the soothing sound of the filter coffee machine at work.
She shuddered a little as she picked the now-coffee-filled mugs and the scalding liquid slopped over the rim of the cup and onto her hand.
It hurt...but not as much thinking about Asuma.

Asuma blushed even more as the woman placed a hand on his forehead. Her hand was cold yet soft and comforting. When she asked him the question, he quickly shook his head and smiled nervously. He couldn't let her find out that he was blushing though.
As she walked into the kitchen he let out a sigh of relief as he sat back on the couch. He wondered how Kurenai really felt about him. They had been good friends for a long time, but he had always hoped that she would learn to like him. Guess it would stay with hoping as she showed interest in his fellow teacher Iruka.
As he leaned back he looked around the room. It looked like a nice place to live and he wouldn't mind spending his life here with her. 'Oh damn...just stop thinking about her. You've got a date with Shizune remember. Let's try to make the best of it.' He thought as he closed his eyes for a moment, waiting for the woman to come back.

When she entered the room Asuma had his eyes closed.
Now was time for a little fun. She set the cups down as gently as possible on the coasters that were on the table and brought her face close to Asuma's.
"Boo."
